The Journey of Cameroonian Coffee: Direct from Farm to Cup

The Short but Rich History of Cameroonian Coffee

Cameroon, often celebrated for its diverse cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant arts, is also home to a coffee heritage that has quietly, yet profoundly influenced its agricultural landscape. While the world’s spotlight often shines on coffee powerhouses like Ethiopia and Colombia, Cameroonian coffee holds a unique and compelling place in the global coffee narrative. Introduced during the late 19th century, coffee cultivation in Cameroon began in the fertile soils of the southwestern region. Cameroon’s highlands was later recognized as having great potential, with their rich volcanic soils and temperate climate, for growing coffee, and thus began the country’s journey with this treasured crop.

Initially, coffee farming in Cameroon was small-scale. However, as the coffee plants thrived in the Cameroonian soil, the industry began to grow. The initial focus was primarily on Arabica coffee, planted in the cooler, higher altitudes of the western highlands, particularly in regions like Oku, Banso, Bamaoun, Bamenda, Boyo, Bafoussam, Foumbot, and Dschang. Robusta coffee, more suited to lower altitudes and warmer climates, was introduced later and became popular in the southern and central regions. This early expansion laid the foundation for what would become a significant part of Cameroon’s agricultural economy, despite social-political challenges.

Like many coffee-growing nations, Cameroon has faced its share of challenges. Political instability, fluctuating market prices, and a lack of infrastructure have hindered the growth of the coffee industry. Yet, despite these obstacles, Cameroonian farmers have continued to cultivate coffee with care and dedication, preserving traditional farming practices while adapting to modern techniques.
